About Wilson

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: chocolate brindle
  • Current Size: 35 Pounds
  • Current Age: 4 Years 4 Months (best estimate)

Meet our sweet chocolate-brindled boy Wilson.  Our best assessment (NO GUARANTEE) is that this very handsome 10-month old is a Lab/Doberman Mix.  Wilson came to us from our rescue friends at the Mary Ann Morris Animal Society (MAMAS) in SC.  Thankfully, those kind folks got him to safety.

It is clear that Wilson was not treated well before MAMAS saved him.  He has some shyness/trust issues that we are working on.  From Wilson’s behavior, it appears that food was used as a punishment.  He has NO aggression whatsoever – rather, it’s the opposite.  He needs reassurance to eat - so, his foster parents stay in the room with him to let him know it is okay to eat the food offered.  Yes, this is beyond sad, but it is what happens to some of these wonderful fur-babies.  Thankfully, those days ae behind this sweet boy

Right now, Wilson is about 35 lbs, and we are working on putting some more weight on him.  Wilson has a sweet temperament and has come a long way in his 3 weeks in foster care.  He loves bopping around and playing with his foster siblings.  And he is almost sleeping on the bed with his foster parents. He still gets scared with loud, unexpected noise.  However, his foster parents are doing lots of construction work on their home, and, so, Wilson has gotten used to the sounds of saw, hammers and drills.  And, so, Wilson is definitely coming along.

Nonetheless, Wilson will need someone who is dog savvy, patient, understanding and tuned in to what makes him feel insecure.  He is more comfortable with his foster mom, as she is his main caregiver; but he will stay and take a bite of cheese from his foster dad in the morning when he is fixing his lunch before going to work – this, too, is progress.

Wilson is a young, healthy wonderful boy who is not an "alpha" in any way.  He is a member of the "pack" and learning from them.  He will make some committed, loving, patient family a wonderful companion, but it needs to be understood that this is a lifetime commitment requiring careful consideration.  It is not a spur of the moment “oh, he's cute let’s adopt him because we feel sorry for him" decision. For those serious about adopting, we want you to feel, "Oh, what a nice boy, this is a breed mix in which we are interested, and we like to adopt special needs dogs.”

Wilson is already neutered, he is up-to-date on his vaccines, and he is heartworm negative.  He is also micro-chipped.  So, he is ready for a wonderful family to welcome him home forever.

Due to Wilson’s need to build security, we are seeking a home without young children.  We want a family that can focus on Wilson and his needs.

Wilson is a lovely soul with a heart filled with love.  He just needs the right family to step forward and give him the chance to be a happy, confident and loved canine family member.

If you have the ability & willingness to commit to Wilson for his whole life, we would love to hear from you.  To be considered for adoption, please register on our website, www.safeatlast.net.  When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the Safe at Last online adoption application.  Once we have your application, upon preliminary review, if we feel your home is a good match, a volunteer will be in touch by email to commence the review process.  Our process is straightforward but involves the phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment.  An adoption fee of $425 also applies.

Please be advised, you cannot meet Wilson until you have been approved to adopt.  And, we cannot consider you until you have submitted the Safe at Last online adoption application.

Wilson is being fostered in Worcester, NY (Otsego County).  Approved adopters are required to go to the foster home to complete the adoption.

Thank you for choosing to rescue and for your interest in sweet Wilson.

NYS Rescue Registry No. RR 087.
