Shelby is a courtesy posting for the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley and is not a Safe at Last dog. So, if you are interested, please be sure to direct your inquiries to Shelby's foster mom Jill at swiffer109@yahoo.com. Foster mom Jill is the only person who can answer your questions and/or consider you for adoption. So, please email her at swiffer109@yahoo.com. Many thanks for your interest.
Shelby is a lovely little 6-year-old, spayed female, Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua/Pittie mix. Sadly, Shelby's owner unexpectedly passed away from covid…, and she is without any other family. Shelby therefore will need to find a new forever home.
As to be expected, she was a bit confused, and unsure about the drastic change in her living situation; however, dogs are resilient, and she is adjusting well. She is housebroken and trustworthy in the home when left alone. She is also crate trained if needed. She is actually a pretty easy-going girl in the household.
When Shelby first came into foster care after her dad passed away, she didn't have much in the way of social skills interacting with other animals – she just never had a reason to since she lived solo. After working with her for just a very short time, she has learned and is interacting appropriately in her foster home with both her canine foster sister and resident felines. We feel that Shelby would be able to live with another dog that would match her personality type – a non-dominant/non-confrontational canine counterpart would pair best. And dog-savvy cats would be fine.
Shelby would also be very happy to have her own person/people all to herself; so we will assess potential animal companions on a case-by-case basis - so long as the humans in the household are dog-savvy and committed to giving Shelby continued guidance :)
She is working on her leash reactivity towards other unknown dogs/cats, an area that just became a habit for her. However, Shelby responds so very well to correction and redirection of undesirable behavior. She is very food-motivated and, thus, when necessary, consistent correction & reward result in her being very readily redirected into more appropriate behavior.
All in all, Shelby is a quite easy little house dog. She is a bit chunky at 35 lbs – should be about 30 – so, she is a great, manageable size; although she can pull a bit on the leash. She is fairly mellow indoors and happy to relax in her favorite chair. She also enjoyed daily walks with her dad & she would love to continue that with her new family.
We feel Shelby would do best in a retirement style home, with not a lot of commotion going on; but she, of course, will also need activity to keep her healthy & mentally stimulated. We feel she’d be ok with older kids who will respect what she has been through (10+ year old kids).
Shelby is such a nice little dog who got a raw deal in losing her dad when she should have been set for the rest of her days. She will be a great companion for the right family, and we hope you will consider her.
If you have any additional questions. please contact foster mom Jill (swiffer109@yahoo.com)! And, please feel free to fill out the Safe at Last adoption application if interested, and caretaker Jill will follow up with you.
