About Oscar

Meet our adorable Oscar!!

Oscar is a 10-month old, male/neutered Sharpei/Dachshund mix (BEST GUESS ON BREED MIX, NO GUARANTEE). He weighs about 20 pounds.  Once he is comfortable with you (which takes about 1/2 an hour), he is a playful, happy boy.  He loves to be with his people.  He does like to play with other dogs, too...even if they don't want to play with him!  Eventually, he takes the hint and moves on.  He met a couple of cats while he was on leash.  He seemed hesitant and then became disinterested so we cannot say how he would do in a home with cats.  He does very well in the crate, especially overnight.  Offer him a treat and in the crate he goes!  He does understand that he is supposed to go potty outside, but there have been accidents in his foster home.  He is working with his humans so they will learn his schedule; he is improving, but still will need work in this area.

Snow is new to him.  He prefers eating it inside the house as opposed to playing in it outside.  But, if there is an opportunity to be outside with another dog and play, he'll go there gladly despite the snow.

He appreciates having a plethora of toys at his disposal.  But he also enjoys socks and the laundry you plan to wash tomorrow, so beware!  Once or twice a day he gets extra exuberant and can forget that his humans are not pincushions.

His puppy teeth are still sharp so when he starts getting mouthy, correction by redirection is necessary.  He will settle down and sit nicely on your lap while he plays, but that usually doesn't last too long.  Remember, he's still a puppy!   He gets tired before 8:30 p.m., but be sure to take him out one last time before putting him in his crate at night when you go to bed.

Oscar needs a home without young children (under 10) because of his mouthy behavior.  A fenced yard would be ideal so he can run and run and run!  He is a smart boy and would do well with his humans in a training class.  He walks nicely on a leash and has a great appetite.

If you are interested in providing a loving, nurturing home to Oscar for his whole life - please register on our website, www.safeatlast.net.  Once you receive your password on your email account, then please log back on to our website with username and password to complete the Safe at Last online adoption application.  Once we have your application, if we feel you are a good match for Oscar, we will be in touch by email to commence the review process.  Our process is very straightforward but does involve the phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment.  An adoption fee of $425 also applies.

Please be advised that you cannot meet Oscar until you have been approved to adopt.  And, we cannot consider you until you have registered with us and completed the Safe at Last online adoption application.  Delay in submitting your application will put you at a disadvantage relative to other potentially qualified applicants.

Oscar is being fostered in the Greenville, NY area.  Approved adopters are required to go to the foster home to complete the adoption.  ALL COVID 19 PROTOCOLS (INCLUDING MASK) MUST BE STRICTLY OBSERVED.

Thank you for choosing to rescue and for your interest in our Oscar.
