Meet Hawk Eye, one of Onyx's boy pups, now 5 months old.

Hawk Eye is a sweet, social, happy baby.  Our best assessment is that he is some type of terrier mix - with what we have no idea.  We anticipate (THOUGH CANNOT GUARANTEE) that Hawk Eye will be medium in size when full grown (25-35 lbs).  Again, folks, no guarantee on breed mix or size!  What we can say for sure is that Hawk is a very, very nice puppy.  He is being fostered with other dogs and cats and does well with all.  He is an affectionate, happy, playful little man.

Hawk Eye is also somewhat special.  We pursued getting Hawk Eye an echocardiogram (to check his heart) due to the fact that he and his siblings had been exposed to parvo virus well prior to coming to us.  While there were (and are) zero signs of Hawk having any issues, we just wanted to be sure.

Hawk's echocardiogram (which was done at our specialty vet on September 30, 2021) found the following:  "Hawkeye's echocardiogram reveals normal heart size; however, heart function is noted to be at the low end of normal.  This may be a variant of normal.  There is also a chance that this is related to occult heart disease (heart disease that may develop in the future) or reduce function secondary to a previous [exposure to parvo] (myocarditis).  As there is no heart enlargement or clinically significant heart function loss, there is no need to start supportive heart medication.  I advise recheck of his heart size and function at full maturity (approximately 1 year of age).  I did not detect anything of concern that would indicate an active risk of sudden death... Heart medications are not recommended.  .. [A]t 1 year of age.. a recheck examination and echocardigram [are recommended]."

So, the bottom line is that Hawk's heart function is at the low end of normal - and this may be totally normal for him (without any medical implications).  It is also possible that the low-end-of-normal value is due to having been previously subjected to/impacted by parvo virus.  Regardless, Hawk will need another echocardiogram when he is 1 year old, and that procedure runs about $600.
Hawk Eye is a really nice puppy, and he has already lost out on two great families who did not feel comfortable accepting this risk due to their individual circumstances.  Of course, that is totally understandable and fine.  Adopting is a long-term commitment, and the match needs to be right.  Hawk, therefore, is still looking for his forever home -- he may be just fine going forward, but it is possible he may need heart medication down the road.  We simply cannot be sure at this time.  We are thus putting it out there for your consideration -- to see if there is a family willing to open their heart and home to this sweet boy.  If you are interested, please submit your application.  You can also email us at info@safeatlast.net with any additional questions.
