Meet Dottie May!

Dottie is currently 9-10 months old (born ~April 2022). She appears to be a Beagle/Cattle Dog mix (BEST ASSESSMENT, NO GUARANTEE) and is currently about 25 lbs. Dottie was found all alone in a church parking lot by an amazing couple. They took her in and gave her a wonderful basic start until Safe At Last was able to take her into rescue!

What can we say about Dottie?? Well, to start, she is beautiful both inside and out!! Dottie is such a pretty girl; her coloring is unique and makes her a love to look at. She is also a sweetheart who absolutely loves to cuddle and snuggle with her humans & get plenty of belly rubs. She is quite the talented cuddler!!

In terms of her day-to-day needs, beyond needing lots of love from her humans, Dottie will also need exercise to keep her mentally and physically stimulated. She is an active girl who loves to be outside playing fetch for hours, running/playing at the dog park or hiking. Dottie absolutely LOVES to fetch balls. In fact, her beloved balls came all the way from NC to NY with her!! She is quite the happy sight when engaged in play!!

Currently, Dottie is learning to walk on a leash & she is improving, but there is just so much to see, and life is short; so she is a bit of a tugger (which is pretty typical for an adolescent dog). A gentle lead or harness (that clips in front on the chest), along with some basic training, will help her slow down while also allowing her to experience all the sights, sounds and smells around her. Dottie also is working on how to greet people politely and not jump – again, this is very common behavior for adolescent dogs & will simply require consistency and continued training from her human family. Like most dogs of her tender age, Dottie is just so happy and excited to meet people and interact with them... and, so, she will need continued guidance from her humans to teach her polite greetings.

Beyond being very people-friendly, Dottie May is also dog friendly & truly loves playing with other dogs. She plays well with her 4 canine foster siblings and is doing fabulously in her foster home. When she’s had enough play time, however, and is done, she makes it known that she wants some down time. Dottie also loves her crate for her quiet alone time. At times, she can be a bit possessive over her crate, as it’s her safe space. So, her crate is best left in a room where other dogs can’t regularly access it, and Dottie should only go in when being left alone for her down time/sleep time. Also, every once in a while, when playing with other dogs, Dottie can be a little toy possessive; however, removing the toy resolves the problem.

As for kitties, Dottie does show some interest in cats but does not show aggression. Because she can be interested in kitties, however, Dottie will need oversight and guidance from her human family. We believe she would be okay with a dog savvy cat and an experienced owner who will provide for proper introductions along with supervision while Dottie and the kitty are acclimating to one another.

Dottie is up-to-date on core vaccines, flea-tick preventative and heartworm preventative - thus, she is ready for her forever home. (Dottie is also getting spayed on January 16th). So, she is all ready for a forever family of her own.

We are seeking a forever home for Dottie where she will be given lots of love from her humans, along with the exercise she needs for her mental and physical well-being, and continued guidance and training to help her to continue to blossom. Given how people-oriented & dog-friendly Dottie is, we think she would do fine in a home as a solo dog or in a multiple dog home. Dottie is truly a sweetheart who is ready to bring joy to your life. If you are ready to welcome her into your heart and home, we’d love to hear from you.
