Meet Cane!!

Like a red-headed gentleman with a little scruff, Cane is your boy – about 40 lbs and a 3-year-old NC Scruffy. (Yes, we know it isn't a breed, but we like to think they are our very own cute designer breed.) 

Cane is currently going through heartworm treatment in NC and should arrive in NY sometime around the end of April. 

If you are wondering how he became Heartworm positive, it’s pretty simple to explain -- it's a lack of care (preventative meds that could have easily been given to him, but were not) and, of course, being tethered to the tree in the front yard. That was his old life, and that old life of neglect is happily behind him. 

We are glad to report that Cane is now enjoying indoor life.  And, one of his favorite basics is a dog bed and being in front of the refrigerator please!!

Cane loves his walks and trips to the dog parks. Hiking is a little too much work at the present time.  So leisurely strolls are his thing (and will be until he is past his Heartworm treatment and recoup period). 

While Cane likes other dogs, proper introductions are important to him so that he feels safe. Then, romping and games are okay with him. 

Cane is housebroken and not at all destructive.  He loves his toys and will make sure he knows where you are.  Right now, foster dad is really important to Cane while he becomes secure with life as a family member and not a possession in the front yard.  Cane is so full of love and joy; he is sure to share that love with a forever family who will cherish him and welcome him as a valued family member.

To pursue adoption, please register on www.safeatlast.net.  (Click Register on the left-hand side of our homepage.)  When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the SAFE AT LAST on-line adoption application.  (Click Forms/Application on the left-hand side of our homepage and select the Adoption Application.) Once we have your completed application, if we feel you are a good match, we will contact you by email. (So, please check your SPAM.)  Our process is straightforward but involves a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment.  An adoption fee of $450 applies.

YOU CANNOT MEET Cane UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO ADOPT.  WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOU UNTIL YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE FULLY FILLED OUT SAFE AT LAST ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION.  Delay in submitting your application will put you behind other potentially suitable applicants.  Ultimately, approved adopters will be required to go to the foster home to complete the adoption (in the Schoharie/Albany County area).
