Dear Sammy came to us from a very high kill shelter in South Carolina.  Actually, Sammy's time was up; he was scheduled to be euthanized that very day.  You see, Sammy is a special needs senior -- he is virtually blind due to neglect.  He has inverted eyelids, which scarred his corneas, rendering him blind (because his "owners" did nothing to correct this condition).  Actually, Sammy was found wandering on a roadway in rural South Carolina and was brought to the local shelter.  Being a big, blind dog, he was among the first that would have been euthanized... We responded to the pleas for his life, and now he is safe and sound in foster care.  And, he is ding FABULOUSLY!!

Sammy is a special boy, not just a "special needs" boy.  A sweeter, gentler dog you could not find.  He has suffered such inhumanity, but still is so very trusting and gentle with people.  His foster parents tell us that he is the easiest dog they have ever had - he is happy, trusting and positively easy-going!!

Sammy is a happy boy whether he is indoors or outside.  He loves being outdoors and enjoys leash walks.  He also loves the company of other dogs.  Indoors, Sammy is a dream. He is 100% housetrained & once he learns his indoor environment (which happens quickly), he does great.

Also, we are happy to report that Sammy has a clean bill of health.  His detailed blood work came back perfect - no metabolic problems whatsoever!!  He is also negative for Lyme, heartworm, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichia.  As for his eyes, while his blindness is irreversible, his eyes do not hurt him, and, so, he does not need surgery.  Since Sammy is an older gent, we started him on supplements (glucosamine) to help with some stiffness he seemed to have in his back end when he first arrived.  Now, that is fine as well.  Sammy looks and feels great & is ready for a loving forever family of his very own.

If you are looking to welcome a sweet senior into your heart and are able to provide for Sammy's special needs, the specialness of this boy's heart will surely touch your soul.  Sammy is a wonderful dog who did not deserve to suffer at human hands.  If you can provide him with the warmth and caring that he deserves, we would love to hear from you.  Please email us at info@safeatlast.com and/or go to our website (www.safeatlast.net) to complete an adoption application.

Thank you for opening your heart and home to Sammy.
