Meet stunning Luna (the name she came with).  (We were floating calling her Neela, Ruka, Elsa, or Dani [from Daenerys, mother of dragons], but she kind of knows her current call name -- so, "Lu" it is!!).

Regardless on her moniker, just look at this beautiful young queen!  Luna just turned 12 months old at the beginning of July.  She's about 80 lbs, a pretty large and strong girl.  Our best assessment (no guarantee) is that she is a Catahoula Hound/Great Dane mix.  She's pretty much full grown at this point in time, and she is at a nice-looking weight.

Luna was just recently sprung from an over-crowded shelter in South Carolina, and she arrived in New York on 7/13.  She is doing GREAT in her foster home!  Wonderful with all the other dogs, big and small - likes to play but accepts correction from the resident canines in charge.  Luna is also housebroken & crates up quietly.

Luna is a higher energy gal & loves to play.  Between play with other dogs and outdoor activities in her foster home, she also settles nicely.  Luna would like an active home where she will be included in day-to-day activities to keep her physically and mentally satisfied.  As for manners, well, she definitely has them; but when she's really excited, yes, we could work on some jumping, bull-in-a-China-shop habits.  Keep in mind though how long this poor girl had been stuck in a kennel - and during a time when she should have been doing her basic young adult dog training... so, you can't really blame her for being a bit overexuberant at times.  Luna is smart and very receptive to direction and correction  - so, she will get there... and foster mom is working on smoothing out those young dog edges.  Ideally, Luna's new family will continue in a basic obedience program so that Luna will both look and act like the stunner she is.

Personality wise - she is a very NICE dog.  In her transition, which is stressful and confusing for any dog, she acted a little uncertain at times - actually a breed characteristic of Catahoulas [and often Danes for that matter] to sometimes be suspicious of goings on.  But once she realized all is good, she turned into the happy big puppy that she is.  And note, Luna will alert bark when people come to the door, and being a big dog, yes, she's a little loud - but for heavens sake, she is a dog!!  Foster mom is teaching her a couple barks is ok, but after that we settle - again Luna is already learning just in the couple of days since arriving.  (Apartment living might not be best suited for her, but it depends on the situation.)

Luna's original paperwork from the shelter has an intake date of Feb 2022... It's so sad that this young girl has spent the majority of the past 7 months in a kennel in a stressful shelter environment.  No more.... She is learning what life is really all about and is ready to share her love with a family who will love and nurture her in return.

Luna would love to live with another dog, or at least have frequent playdates with social canine friends!  We think older dog-savvy kids (maybe 10+) would be acceptable.  At this time, we think Luna would do best in a home without cats.  Her foster home does have indoor cats, but Luna has shown the desire to chase them and be a bit overstimulated especially when they run.  Because she's currently in an experienced dog behavior and training foster home, it's been manageable, and we're continuing to train; but at this time, probably no cats in her forever home.
